Classical guitars made from the filet of the tree:
Hanika Gitarrenbau manufactures genuine sound wonders from sustainably sourced veneer

Bonn/Baiersdorf. Hanika Gitarrenbau, headquartered in Baiersdorf, Bavaria, has been making great-sounding concert guitars from the best veneers since 1953, using sawn veneers up to about 3 millimeters thick.

It is a long way to the finished concert guitar. A decisive factor here is the wood used: obtained mainly from sustainable forestry, it is processed by the employees of the traditional company with great craftsmanship. "The decisive factor here is the quality of the sawn veneer we use. In addition, construction features and craftsmanship are also decisive for the perfect sound," says company owner Armin Hanika. There is a lot of manual work in every guitar and every part is checked again and again.

The tops of the concert guitars are made of spruce or cedar. For the backs, certified tropical woods such as Indian rosewood, ziricote or bocote are used, but also partly thermo-modified or smoked veneers of cherry, maple, service tree or oak. "We place great emphasis on beautifully grained woods with a special texture. In many areas of the concert guitars, we work 'bookmatched,' that is, mirror-symmetrical. After all, the eye also listens," says Hanika.

Classical guitars are finished with a variety of surface coatings that bring out the beauty of the veneer. Among other things, shellac polishes are used, there are open-pored and closed-pored matt surfaces and also high-gloss surfaces made of UV-curing acrylic lacquer.

The wishes of the musicians for whom the guitars are made are as individual as the look. "Our production is designed to take into account the individual needs of the artist, producing to order with a batch size = 1," explains the company owner. In order to be able to offer each musician the right instrument, he says, there is a wide range of models and finishes. "Individual customization in terms of wood type, color, fingerboard or other details is also no problem."

"In guitar making, veneer can ideally showcase its beauty and individuality. Its appearance and balanced sound delight not only the audience but also the owner of the musical instrument time and time again," says Ursula Geismann, managing director of the Initiative Furnier + Natur (IFN). "This is also known to such well-known artists as Reinhard Mey or the modern troubadour Estas Tonne, who inspire their audiences worldwide with our guitars," concludes Armin Hanika. IFN/DS

Initiative Veneer + Nature (IFN) The Initiative Furnier + Natur (IFN) e.V. was founded in 1996 by the German veneer industry and its partners. Today it is supported by European companies from the veneer industry, the trade and the veneer processing industry as well as trade associations of the wood industry. The aim of the association is to promote veneer as a natural all-round material.
